UK Bank Holidays 2025/26
Bank holidays in England and Wales follow a set pattern each year, though exact dates shift based on the calendar. In 2025, the confirmed bank holidays are: New Year's Day (1 January), Good Friday (18 April), Easter Monday (21 April), Early May Bank Holiday (5 May), Spring Bank Holiday (26 May), Summer Bank Holiday (25 August), Christmas Day (25 December), and Boxing Day (26 December). For 2026, Easter falls on Sunday 5 April, making Good Friday 3 April and Easter Monday 6 April.
Scotland has an additional bank holiday on 2 January (2nd January) and St Andrew's Day (30 November). Northern Ireland includes St Patrick's Day (17 March) and the Battle of the Boyne / Orangemen's Day (12 July). If a bank holiday falls on a weekend, the following Monday is usually designated as the substitute day off. Employers are not legally required to give bank holidays off or pay extra for working them, unless specified in your employment contract.
Planning around bank holidays can save money on travel. Booking trains and flights well in advance of bank holiday weekends typically offers significant savings. The most popular bank holiday for domestic travel is the late May (Spring) bank holiday, coinciding with half-term in many areas. August bank holiday is the second busiest. For the best deals, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead and consider travelling on the bank holiday itself rather than the Friday before, when demand peaks. Many attractions offer special events on bank holidays, so check listings early and book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
