Moving House Costs in the UK

Moving house in the UK costs between \u00a3800 and \u00a35,000 on average, depending on distance and volume. A local move with a two-bedroom flat typically costs around \u00a3400 to \u00a3700 for a removal company. A long-distance move with a four-bedroom house can exceed \u00a32,000.

Who You Need to Tell When You Move

The list is longer than most people expect. At minimum you must notify: your local council (council tax), utility providers (gas, electric, water), broadband provider, Royal Mail (mail redirect costs from \u00a333.99 for three months), your bank, employer, HMRC, the DVLA (driving licence and vehicle registration), your GP surgery, dentist, optician, TV Licensing, the electoral register, insurance providers (home, car, life), and any subscription services.

It is also worth updating your address with Amazon, eBay, PayPal and any online shopping accounts. If you have children, inform their school. If you run a business, update Companies House and your business bank account.

Starting eight weeks ahead gives you breathing room. The biggest mistake people make is leaving everything to the final week, which turns an exciting milestone into an overwhelming scramble. Use this checklist to stay on track and enjoy the move.
